Meet Desert Rose Fiber Arts

JMC - Desert Rose Fiber Arts

Hello Fellow Crafters ~ welcome to the world of Desert Rose Fiber Arts!

I was born into an artistic family – and grew up among folks who excelled in their chosen craft. With all their talents around me, I learned all types of needlework and to view the world with an artisan’s eye at a very young age.

Throughout my life following patterns was something I rarely did, preferring to create my own classic designs with unique touches. Over the years I have created many distinctive sweaters and accessories for family & friends. (Several lucky member of the Rocky Mt. Trials Assoc have also been recipients of sweaters or shawls created especially for them. These can be viewed in the RMTA Gallery on my website.)

In 2004, I showed a sweater I designed and knit to my LYS ~ I had bought the yarn there. The owner of the shop was so impressed she insisted on displaying the sweater for several months and encouraged me to enter the world of designing and selling hand knitting patterns. With family and friends in agreement, I released my first pattern in 2005 and have continued adding new designs to my pattern line ~ Desert Rose Fiber Arts, ever since.

With a background in both knitting and sewing/tailoring, I like to design garments that are fashionable while remaining classic ~ garments that can be worn for years. The seamstress in me plans well thought out construction, which results in a project that is usually much easier to knit than the finished garment appears. The artist in me continually looks toward the fashion side of design and enjoys coming up with new stitch patterns, and new uses for old ones. I also continuously look for new techniques to learn and incorporate that new knowledge into my work.

In the fall of 2008 I made my first submission to a publisher, and that design – Frilly Prilly Poncho – was subsequently published in “It’s In the Bag – Knitting Projects to Take & Make”. Along with other books by DRG Publications/Annie’s, my work has been featured in Knit Scene, Knit.wear (now Knit Purl), Creative Knitting and Love of Knitting magazines, Knit Picks, Twist Collective, Universal and Cascade Yarns, and several others. Visit my “Published Designs” page for full list of publications featuring my work.

In the spring of 2015 I decided to branch out into knitting supplies & accessories, and to update Desert Rose Designs to Desert Rose Fiber Arts. Since it seems my stitch markers are always in ‘another’ project…this was the perfect place to start. With a love of unique jewelry, crafting unique stitch marker sets was a given. And giving my stitch marker sets the same attention to detail as I give my patterns is the only way I know. Practicing techniques for hand wire wrapping until I was satisfied with the quality of my work allows me to offer stitch markers sets that are guaranteed to not snag your knitting. Each set features a closed ring as well – no open, soldered, or glued jump rings. And no two set are the exactly the same ~ each is unique.

I find inspiration for my designs in the world around us. Nature offers colors and forms, architecture shows us structure and the skies give us moods.

When not knitting, thinking about knitting or dreaming up new designs and stitch marker sets, I love to spend time with my husband, family, friends and our dogs & goats.

Happy Knitting ~ Jean
